So... here I am, sitting by the window enjoying my book and a cup of tea, when I glance outside and spot this "rodent with a tail" trying to figure out how to reach my bird feeder.

he quickly went high and low, contemplating his strategy....

when suddenly, he glances over and sees ME at eye level, staring out the window at him.

Clearly he has a problem with being photographed because...
the next thing I knew, he flung himself through the thorny rose bushes and landed on the window sill where he tried to figure out how to get in. And do what? Tell me all about it? The more I think about it, I'm fairly certain I've seen him somewhere before because he looked very familiar....

Ever heard of this plant? I discovered it this morning at the farmer's market. It is a tropical plant that blooms all summer long, closes up at night like the photo below...

and when it is growing on the plant, it is upside down like this:

I was told that it starts out a pale buttery color when closed, looks white when open and begins to turn a peachy pink like the one above when the flower begins to fade.

So having a combination of old and new flowers in a vase together looks a lot like having a bouquet of different kinds of flowers! I think the closed up version is my favorite and is very Georgia O'Keefe-esque.

I was so excited to see that after several days on a nest (built by robins last year), that doves had chosen this location. Then within one day after I saw the egg, it had disappeared along with the mom. I watched as they tried to build another nest over a doorway ledge. The straw kept falling off because the ledge was so narrow, so after another week, they abandoned that effort, and she appeared to have relocated atop a hedge. Eventually they gave up on that effort too. Sigh.

We have a zillion May Apples this spring. They begin in a closed umbrella shape and then as they open up to a full umbrella shape they cover a lot of space and provide a great sea of green. I have not one purple iris. I have 'moved' all my bulbs, even Mamo's, which really makes me nervous. Including her peony! I had all the old spent azaleas pulled out. And, all of Ms. Bark's lilies. My beautiful Easter lily that my son gave me years ago. Making way for new azaleas and moving all the other stuff to sunnier beds. They are all in clumps, pots and buckets. Just hankering to be planted. As in . . . when the landscaper gets the beds ready . . . the one that was scheduled to be here last month . . . So . . . I took a walk in the woods. Which is actually only feet from the back door. And, I found some purple. Have no idea what it is except that it is a wildflower. And, remember May Apples?

In keeping with the I'm Older Than Dirt Theme - do you remember the name of the restaurant we would go to in Manhattan and the owner would greet us and look around to all the other customers and say "The Sisters - the Sisters!" Good Lord. And, not only take us over to Audrey Meadows and introduce us but insist that we take the table next to her? I miss that. What I really miss is the fact that we used to go to NYC about every other year and see all the great plays. And, stay in the theater district. And, did we always have great seats or what? We could have reached out and touched Jill Clayburgh. Or Mandy Patinkin and Bernadette Peters. Tommy Tune. Remember Ann Reinking? And, taking the D train to watch the Mets ? MoooKee . . . MoooKee! Having a slice for lunch? One summer day everyone - everyone - was in the streets to see Michael Jackson. You ran, I walked/ran a 10K thru Central Park. The shoe shop at Trump Tower not only had beautiful shoes but the beautiful Mom and beautiful daughter that were trying on a few pair, that we bumped into again later at one of the plays, was Ivana and little Ivanka. That was when the 'Queen of Mean' owned Helmsley Palace. That was when we would go to the skating rink at Rockefeller Center - not 30 Rock. That was when what's his name sold Studio 54 and had opened the Palladium . . . which was later demolished. Moma Leone's. When we went to Windows on the World Restaurant in the World Trade Center North we could see forever. We would walk Wall Street all the way down to South Street Seaport. Or, be in heaven on Mulberry Street in Little Italy where LaBella Ferrara had the BEST cannoli's EVER? I'm thinking a road trip . . . . . Strawberry Fields Forever . . . .

How old am I? Well, you're gonna find out. I have always loved Rosemary Clooney. She was born in Kentucky in May of 1928. She did her best work singing standards for Johnny Mercer and Cole Porter, Duke Ellington, George and Ira Gershwin. She became one of America's best-known popular singers in 1951 with a song called ''Come-on-a-My House,'' which was a huge hit record, and followed that with other novelties like ''Mambo Italiano''.

In 1954 she appeared with Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye singing Irving Berlin songs in ''White Christmas.''

In later years she had been appearing in the best cabarets and on concert stages, singing pop-jazz standards that earned her new audiences and renewed respect. She got especially great reviews at Michael's Pub in Manhattan (remember when we hung out with Woody Allen there?)

She was nominated for an Emmy award for an appearance on ''E.R.,'' and she was given a lifetime achievement Grammy award a month after she was hospitalized for lung cancer surgery.

And, of course, she was George's Aunt.

So, enjoy this - another song of hers I really liked - by these two darling sisters . . .

This Christmas morning, I am thankful to have been born into a family who loves to make things. As I look around, I see Jo's needlepoint gingerbread house, Ace's wooden birdhouse, the scarf you knitted, and the life-sized wooden sleigh Daddy designed and crafted for me (and I sewed all that is inside the sleigh). How fortunate are we to have a family who places an emphasis on sharing creativity? Merry Christmas to all!

While you were out shopping for awesome princess bikes, I was home perfecting my newest creation. I was thinking red for the holidays...so I rimmed festive glasses with a little crushed peppermint and added about half a glass of pomegranate juice (because Dr. Oz says its good for me), plus a touch of peppermint liqeur to "up" the pepperminty appeal. And last but not least, I threw in a festive little ol'splash of champagne. I think I'll call it a Peppermint Tiara, 'cause you just feel so...royal. Why, in no time at all, you find that you've got your feet propped up in your favorite bunny slippers as you cruise through all those fabulous internet sales. No lines. No arm wrestling anybody to the ground over a great buy. No traffic. No searching for a parking space....my kind of shopping. And here's a great gift idea for the rest of your family: New Sunglasses!!!--they will thank you because they're going to get kind of tired of squinting from the glare of that sparkling tiara you're going to want be wear when you try my new concoction...

My mom and I have been obsessed with buttons this week. So my latest project was finishing this 10-foot button garland for the tree. It is easy to make, but if you try it, be careful to keep it from getting tangled. I used a heavy silky cotton embroidery thread. The whites, creams, ivories and sand colors appear iridescent like seashells. Martha would think it is a good thing indeed.

Here's the thing . . . the house smells so good!

This recipe is for a house. But I make it just as it says and use cookie cutters for the ornaments - which makes a lot. So, hang half and eat half . . .

Molasses Gingerbread Cookie Dough

Ingredients

1 1/4 cups packed dark-brown sugar
3/4 cup unsulfured molasses
1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter
1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
1 tablespoon ground ginger
1/2 teaspoon coarse salt
1 1/4 cups milk
1 tablespoon baking powder
6 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

Directions

Combine brown sugar, molasses, butter, spices, and salt in a medium saucepan over low heat, stirring with a wooden spoon, until sugar is dissolved, about 10 minutes. Stir in milk. Remove from heat, and let cool.
Pour milk mixture into a mixing bowl; add baking powder and flour. With an electric mixer, and beginning on low speed and increasing to medium, beat until well combined. Divide dough in half; shape into disks. Wrap in plastic, and refrigerate overnight. Dough can be frozen up to 1 month; thaw in the refrigerator before using.

Glittered Pinecone Ornaments How-To
To glitter pinecones, hold a cone carefully, and brush craft glue over tips of scales.

Then, holding cone over bowl, spoon fine glitter over scales.

For drop ornaments, hot glue a miniature glass ball at the top of the pinecone. You can snip off the end of each pinecone, if necessary, to make a flat place to glue a ball. Run twine through the hole in top ball for a hanger.

While my most recent project was painting, my all-encompassing "current project" has centered around putting the house back together now that the painters have packed up and moved on.

This and the next three posts are projects I am working on. I have competed this one - thanks to my best friend. I would add to the instructions provided in the kit: use paper clips to hold the edges together. Use a firm, straight edge (like the backside of a knife) for bending. And, last but not least - not for small children! Big women only.

The style of this quilt is Trapunto. It was among several beautiful quilts displayed at the Upper Cumberland Quilt Festival in Algood, Tennessee. The quilt top, batting and the quilt backing make a sandwich for the running stitch. The running stitches outline feathers, leaves, flowers, swirly designs or whatever pattern being worked. Extra batting is then placed inside making the pattern raised. Most were white on white and made for weddings.
